Where It All Began

Through the hard work and dedication of volunteers and with the support of local community members and businesses, the Maitland Arts Council has been a beacon of creativity for the City over the past 75+ years.

1946

  • Maitland Arts Council was formed.

1985

  • Minutes and Maitland Mercury media coverage show Maitland Arts Council members proposed and delivered a comprehensive calendar of events, including concerts, plays, dance and ballet performances, weekend art workshops, and theatre workshops.

1995

  • Funding challenges led to the creative idea of a top-quality concert featuring local talent funded by local people be held, members worked hard to seek support for a Debenture Concert.
  • 300 letters of invitation were distributed, and $15 debentures were sold, raising over $3,000.
  • On July 29: Maitland Arts Council held its First Debenture Concert at Maitland Town Hall.
  • The concert received extensive media attention and rave reviews from attendees and performers.

Subsequent Years

  • Maitland Arts Council continued planning and delivering performance opportunities and public concerts.
  • Advocacy for donations and support for scholarships, instruments, and arts advancements throughout the region.
  • Active participation in Heritage Month, Conservatorium initiatives, collaborations with Festival Opera, liaising with Maitland City Council, and organising local events and performances.

2016 Onwards

  • Maitland Arts Council embraced social media and digital advertising opportunities.
  • Events like 'Songs from The Gatsby Era,' 'Showstopper,' 'Across the Atlantic,' 'Opera Gala at Mansfield’s,' 'The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace,' and 'A Viennese Night to Remember' continued to showcase local talent and entertain local audiences.

2019 - 2021

  • The passing of President Bob Geoghegan in October 2019 marked a significant moment in the organisation's history.
  • COVID19 related restrictions on public performances and gatherings saw a hiatus for Maitland Arts Council and live music and theatre across the region generally.

2023

  • With renewed enthusiasm and under President Pennie Kearney, Maitland Arts Council relaunched its brand and introduced a new website.
  • The 'Strings in Spring' concert on November 18th marked the first public performance in this new era and sold out well ahead of time.

2024 & Beyond

  • A reinvigorated calendar of events is planned, offering diverse offerings for new audiences.
  • Maitland Arts Council invites people to register, subscribe, or attend events to be part of its journey into the future.

Maitland Arts Council continues to be a beacon of creativity, evolving with the times and fostering local talent, bringing fresh opportunities to local audiences, and facing challenges with resilience and dedication.
